Successful weekend of indoor track & field action for Texas Lutheran

SEGUIN, Texas -- Texas Lutheran Women's and Men's Indoor Track & Field athletes posted new school records and winning times and marks in action this weekend at meets in Oklahoma and Michigan.

In the University of Central Oklahoma Alumni Classic in Norman, Okla, Dejah Carr(Houston/Channelview) set a new record of 15.62 meters (51 feet, 3 inches) in the weight throw. Carr finished third in the event.

Jacob Guercia (Forney/Forney) followed Carr's record with a new record of his own, with a toss of 13.26 meters (43-6). Guercia took fourth in the event,
In the long jump, William Guerrier-Gattis (Bishop/Bishop) jumped into the record books with a 6.57-meter (21-6 3/4) mark. Guerrier-Gattis finished fifth overall (third among collegiate athletes).

Caimen McDonough (Canyon Lake/Canyon Lake) hit a record 13.63-meter (44-8 3/4) leap in the triple jump to lead a 1-2-3 sweep of the event with TLU teammates Gattis and Ezrael Powell following closely behind.

On the track, TLU saw both the women's and men's records falling in the 3,000 meter event. First, Ciara Rodriguez (Uvalde/Uvalde) ran 11:54.12. In the next race, Caleb Calderon (Austin/Akins) crossed the line in 9:10.67.

The Bulldogs' 800-meter specialist Ashley Rynard (Temple/Temple) ran at the Grand Valley State Big Meet 1 and Big Meet 2 in Allendale, Mich.

"On Friday, she ran in a stacked heat of Division 2 stand-outs," said Darlene Holland, TLU's head coach for indoor/outdoor track and field. "She was in great position with only 150 to go in the race, but then she started over-striding. It's something she knows she needs improvement on and took that mentality into Big Meet 2 the next day."

"To have a bad race and still run 2:13 was good for her. And then to turn around the next day and outrun the competition while just working on her mechanics shows great determination and growth on her part in the event.

Rynard won the Big Meet 2 800 with a time of 2:14.68.
