SEGUIN, Texas -- The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs shook off elimination in two games Saturday in the 2010 American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament at TLU's Katt-Isbel Field.

TLU won the loser's bracket game early Saturday against Hardin-Simmons, eliminating the Cowboys 10-6. The Bulldogs advanced to play Mississippi College in a second elimination game at 4:45 p.m., also on Saturday. MC fell to the University of Texas at Tyler 13-2 in the winner's bracket 1 p.m. game.

In a back-and-forth affair that saw each team take late leads, the game between TLU and MC was suspended due to darkness before the start of the 10th inning with the game tied, 8-8.

TLU rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth after the Choctaws scored a pair of runs in the top of the ninth.

Isaac Tijerina (Castroville/Medina Valley) started TLU's ninth-inning magic with a single. He then scored on an RBI double by Jason McGill (San Antonio/Churchill). McGill advanced to third on the throw home and scored on an RBI single from Evan Curtis (Dallas/Lake Highlands).

TLU had the winning run at third base, but MC's Daniel Cowart recorded a strikeout to end the Bulldogs' chance. The umpires and coaches talked after the ninth and agreed to resume the game at 11 a.m. Sunday.

The first championship game between Texas-Tyler and either MC or TLU will start at 1 p.m., also on Sunday. The second championship game would start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first.

MC took its 8-6 lead against TLU in the top of the ninth with a two-RBI single from third baseman Shane Bennett.

Bo Bell, MC's left-fielder, has driven in three in the suspended game, and Dakota Bodree and Andy Smith each have three hits. Smith has also scored three runs.

TLU's Chris Green (Austin/Bowie/Concordia Texas) has three hits and three runs scored, and Curtis and McGill each have two hits. Curtis has two of the six TLU RBI. Clay Childress (Houston/Jersey Village/Eastfield JC), Darwin Lucero (Gatesville/Gatesville/Hill JC) and Cody Miller (New Braunfels/New Braunfels) each have driven in a run against the Choctaws.

In TLU's early Saturday win over Hardin-Simmons, Jeremiah Steinert (Sugar Land/Dulles) pitched 5-2/3 innings and notched his ninth win of 2010. Steinert struck out five and allowed five earned runs.

Senior side-armer Patrick Pederson (Pearland/Pearland) picked up the first save of his career with 3-1/3 innings of effective relief. Pederson allowed only two hits and one unearned run.

Miller drove in three runs with two hits against the Cowboys. Andrew Femath (El Paso/Montwood/Howard JC), Childress, and Lucero each drove in a pair of runs.

Lucero went 4-for-5 at the plate and scored a run. Femath scored three times and had two stolen bases, giving him 21 on the season.

Entering the resumption of the Saturday game with Mississippi College, the Bulldogs stand at 32-12 overall. MC is 35-8.
