SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran sophomore right-hander Brad Orosey has been named the 2010 American Southwest Conference West Division Pitcher of the Year following a vote of the division’s head baseball coaches.
Orosey (Houston/Cypress Creek) was also named to the ASC West Division First Team as a starting pitcher.
Orosey was joined on the ASC West First Team by senior relief pitcher Tom Hembree (Burnet/Burnet).
A total of nine Texas Lutheran players received ASC West honors of some kind. ASC West Second Team selections went to senior first baseman Clay Childress (Houston/Jersey Village/Eastfield JC), senior second baseman Andrew Femath (El Paso/Montwood/Howard JC), senior shortstop Chris Green (Austin/Bowie/Concordia Texas), senior outfielder Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe, Texas/Santa Fe), and senior pitcher Jeremiah Steinert (Sugar Land/Dulles).
Sophomore catcher Evan Curtis (Dallas/Lake Highlands) and junior outfielder Darwin Lucero (Gateville/Gatesville/Hill JC) were named to the ASC West Division Honorable Mention squad.
Orosey was named ASC West Division Pitcher of the Year after posting a 10-1 record with a 3.15 ERA. Orosey struck out a conference-high 104 batters and pitched a conference-best 97 innings. Opponents hit just .222 against him, and he issued only 21 walks. Orosey tossed a no-hitter against Southwestern University early in the 2010 season.
Hembree, another right-hander, was first in the ASC West in saves, with seven, and finished the year with a team-best 2.60 ERA. Hembree made 20 appearances, all in relief, and pitched 27-2/3 innings. He held opponents to a .262 batting average.
Childress tied for the team lead in RBI, with 43, and hit .337 with a team-best seven home runs. Childress also walked 25 times (second on the team) and scored 32 runs. Childress was second on the team in doubles, with 14.
Femath led the entire ASC in runs, with 59, and was second in the ASC in
stolen bases, with 21 steals in 22 attempts. Femath hit .394 and started in all 45 of TLU’s games in 2010. He had 10 doubles, two triples, and four home runs. He posted an on-base percentage of .488, and he made only six errors at second base all season.
Green hit .311 and scored 45 runs. He too played and started in all 45 games of 2010. Green hit five home runs and was 16-for-20 on stolen base attempts.
Nokelby became the ASC’s all-time hits leader during the 2010 ASC Championship Tournament , in the championship round played at TLU. Nokelby collected hit No. 268, a two-RBI single against Mississippi College, and recorded two more hits at the tournament, bringing his career total to 270.
In 2010, Nokelby hit a team-best .414 with a team-high 72 hits, 16 doubles, and four triples. He drove in 42 runs and scored 50 times. He also walked a team-best 28 times and stole 7-of-8 bases. Nokelby also did not commit an error all season. He started all 45 games of 2010 and started 28 of those games in center field.
Steinert went a career-best 9-2 in 2010 in his first season as a regular in the Bulldogs’ starting rotation. Steinert tossed five complete games, including four in a row at one point in the year. He pitched 88 innings and finished with an ERA of 3.58. Steinert held opponents to a .254 average. He struck out 44 and walked 22. He also picked off a conference-best eight runners.
Curtis, in his first year on the TLU varsity,
played in 40 games and made 33 starts at catcher. He hit .356 with 27 runs scored, 42 hits, five doubles and four home runs. He handled a TLU pitching staff that led the ASC West in ERA (4.54) and finished second in the entire ASC in ERA.
Lucero, a newcomer to TLU for the 2010 season, saw time as the Bulldogs’ starter in right field and in left field. He hit .392 (third on the team) and tied for the team lead in RBI, with 43. Lucero scored 34 runs and recorded 65 hits, 11 doubles, and three home runs. He was 6-for-7 on stolen base attempts. Lucero played and started in 42 of TLU’s 45 games.
TLU was eliminated Sunday in the ASC Championship Tournament after going 3-2 in the tournament (2-0 in divisional playoff round, 1-2 in championship round).
The Bulldogs, with a 32-13 overall record and a 15-6 ASC West Division mark, hold a slim chance at a Pool C (at-large) bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Championships. The tournament field will be announced late Sunday night.
TLU, coached by third-year head coach Greg Burnett, won a second consecutive ASC West Division title in 2010. The Bulldogs now have won eight of the last 10 ASC West Division Championships. Burnett holds an 81-48 overall record and a 40-23 mark in the ASC West Division.
