SEGUIN, Texas – A Saturday baseball doubleheader split with McMurry gave the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs an American Southwest Conference series victory.
After McMurry won Saturday’s first game 7-0 behind a complete-game shutout from right-hander Dakota Smith, TLU secured the series win in an 8-1 victory with a complete-game performance from senior right-hander Travis Staggs.
TLU won the first game of the series 17-3 on Friday afternoon.
During Saturday’s twin bill at Katt-Isbel Field, Smith helped McMurry rebound from Friday’s loss with a five-hit shutout. He scattered five hits, all singles, and walked only two. He struck out three.
McMurry gave Smith a quick lead with two runs in the first. The McMurry lead grew to seven with a five-run fifth frame. Greg Guse and Jake Mullin each drove in a pair of runs for McMurry. Jeff Jackson and Bradd Baker each recorded a pair of hits.
In game two, Staggs took a one-hitter into the ninth inning before surrendering a pair of hits and the lone McMurry run. Staggs entered the final inning having allowed only a third-inning single.
Staggs improved to 3-1 with the win. He struck out four and walked four.
TLU’s Jason McGill went 4-for-5 with a run scored, and Clay Childress added a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored. Ryan Nokelby collected three hits, a run scored, and an RBI.
Chris Green and Evan Curtis each contributed two hits and an RBI. Green also scored twice.
TLU moved to 14-5 overall and to 2-1 in the ASC West Division. McMurry now stands at 7-11 overall and at 1-2 in the ASC West.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday with a 1 p.m. non-conference game against Concordia Nebraska.
