TLU's Jeremiah Steinert named ASC West Pitcher of the Week

SEGUIN, Texas – Texas Lutheran senior right-hander Jeremiah Steinert has been named the American Southwest Conference Pitcher of the Week.

Steinert (Sugar Land/Dulles) tossed a complete-game three-hitter and did not issue a walk in Saturday’s 8-1 victory over Austin College. Steinert struck out three and allowed just one run in seven innings.

Steinert (1-0) and the Bulldogs took two of three games from Austin College over the weekend. TLU swept Saturday’s doubleheader 14-4 and 8-1 but lost on Sunday 12-11 in 10 innings.

TLU (2-1) travels to Georgetown, Texas on Friday for a single 9-inning game with Southwestern University. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

TLU and Southwestern play a noon doubleheader Saturday in Seguin. Game one is set for a noon start from TLU’s Katt-Isbel Field.

HITTER OF THE WEEK
Justin Beasley, 3B, Jr., Concordia Texas
Concordia Texas junior third baseman Justin Beasley (Franklin, TX / FHS) hit .429 with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs to pace a series sweep of Southwestern on the road to start the 2010 season. Beasley also scored four times and walked once.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Jeremiah Steinert, RHP, Sr., Texas Lutheran
Texas Lutheran senior right-hander Jeremiah Steinert (Sugar Land, TX / Dulles HS) tossed a complete-game, three-hitter without a walk to pick up a victory on the road against Austin College. Steinert struck out three batters and allowed just one run over the seven frames.

Cody Jones, OF, Sr., Texas-Tyler
Texas-Tyler senior outfielder Cody Jones (Longview, TX / Hallsville HS) hit .500 with one home run, two doubles and four RBIs over three games. Jones, who got a hit in every game, had a slugging percentage of .971 and also walked twice.
 
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Tyler Seaman, RHP, Sr., Mississippi College
Mississippi College senior right-hander Tyler Seaman (Pascagoula, MS / Jones JC) picked up the win in the Choctaws’ season-opener against Huntingdon by allowing just two runs over six innings with six strikeouts. Seaman surrendered only four hits and walked two batters.
 
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES:
HITTERS: Schreiner SS Pete Trevino hit .455 with a double over three games. . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor 3B Josh Fredrick hit .412 with two doubles and six RBIs over a 3-1 stretch. . . . Sul Ross State 2B/SS Brennyn Smith hit .615 with a double over three games. . . . Texas Lutheran OF Darwin Lucero hit .545 with four RBIs over a 2-1 weekend. . . . Mississippi College 1B Andy Smith went 4-for-9 and stole two bases over two wins.
PITCHERS: Concordia Texas RHP Ben Whiteley tossed six scoreless inningswith six strikeouts in a no-decision against Southwestern. . . . Mary Hardin-Baylor RHP Jared Hopper got the win against nationally-ranked Texas-Tyler by allowing just two earned runs and fanning four over six innings. . . . Schreiner RHO Korey Rose allowed just two runs over 5 2/3 innings of relief work in a loss to Trinity. . . . Texas-Dallas RHP Adam Spinn picked up the win against UMHB in relief by tossing 2 2/3 scoreless innings.
