TLU Women open big lead early, cruise to home victory

SEGUIN, Texas – The Texas Lutheran women’s basketball team jumped to a 21-0 lead and cruised to an 84-59 American Southwest Conference victory over Sul Ross State on Thursday.

At TLU’s Memorial Gymnasium, the Bulldogs remained in contention for an American Southwest Conference Championship Tournament berth with the conference win. TLU moved to 11-8 overall and to 10-6 in the ASC West.

Sul Ross State dropped to 2-18 overall and to 2-14 in the ASC with the loss Thursday.

TLU now sits in third place in the ASC West after McMurry fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Thursday.

The Bulldogs have a one-game lead on McMurry and a two-game lead over Hardin-Simmons with five games to play in the regular season. HSU defeated Concordia Texas on the road, also on Thursday.

The top four teams in the ASC West advance to the conference tournament. TLU has never advanced to the conference tournament since joining the ASC as a full member in 2002-03.

Candace Mitchell (Wharton/Wharton/Eastern Wyoming JC) led TLU with 15 points and 10 rebounds. The junior post also registered three blocks and three steals.

TLU point guard Amy Doyle (Houston/Jersey Village) posted eight points, five assists, and four steals. Jocelyn Langford (Omaha, Neb./San Antonio Clark) and Kate McCanna (Glendale, Ariz./Ironwood/Glendale CC) each scored nine. McCanna had four assists and three rebounds.

TLU sophomore forward Tamisha Timpson (San Antonio/Roosevelt) recorded a team-best six assists and collected five points and four rebounds.

The Bulldogs out-rebounded Sul Ross 59-41 and held the Lobos to 23.2 percent shooting. In the first half, Sul Ross was 4-for-28 from the field.

TLU led 50-19 at the break.

The Bulldogs host the ASC West’s second-place team, Howard Payne, at 1 p.m. Saturday. Howard Payne holds a 16-4 overall mark with a 12-4 conference record. HPU defeated TLU 89-80 in Brownwood last Saturday.
