Texas Lutheran freshman Briana Aiken had never competed in a long jump competition at any level before the 2010 women’s track and field season.

Today, she is a national champion.

Aiken jumped a George Finnie Stadium record 19 feet, 3-1/2 inches Thursday to win the long jump at the NCAA Division III Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

BEREA, Ohio – Texas Lutheran pole vaulter Ligia Bolivar, long jumpers Briana Aiken and Devin Evans, and the Bulldogs' 4x100 meter relay team will be in action today (Thursday) at the 2010 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, contested at Baldwin-Wallace College.

Bolivar (Sugar Land/Travis) begins the competition for TLU with a noon central (1 p.m. eastern) start in the pole vault. The national champion and All-Americans for the pole vault will be decided today. The top eight finishers are awarded All-America status.

Aiken (Pflugerville/Pflugerville) and Evans (Houston/Hightower) compete at 2 p.m. central (3 p.m. eastern) in the long jump. The national champion and All-Americans for the long jump will be decided today.

Graduating student-athletes from each of the 15 American Southwest Conference member institutions have been named as recipients of the 2009-10 ASC Scholar-Athlete Award on their respective campuses, the ASC office announced on Wednesday.

Texas Lutheran Scholar-Athlete awards went to Jacqueline Allen (Katy/Mayde Creek) of women's cross country and women's track and field and to Ryan Nokelby (Santa Fe, Texas/Santa Fe) of baseball.
